Expert review of The Blue Lagoon
Expect perfect blue waters over perfect white sand at Malta’s most sought-after swimming spot.
This is the place to swim in Malta. With the shores of Comino (Malta’s smallest inhabited island) on one side of the lagoon and rocky islands and caves on the other, the water is crystal clear, and the seabed pure sand. Day trip boats coming from Malta and Gozo descend en masse from about 10am-4pm every day in good weather. The tiny patch of sand and even the rocky shore can therefore get very crowded, although there is always enough water for everyone - and more.
Expert tips:
The only way to get a really peaceful swim at the Blue Lagoon is to stay at the Comino Hotel and get down there early in the morning or after the day trippers have gone home.
When booking a day trip to the Blue Lagoon try to get one that will include a little tour around the caves on the way there or back (some charge extra for this).
Bear in mind that the Blue Lagoon is as prone to wind and jelly fish as anywhere else so make sure your boat operator will take you home early if you want to go.
There is no shade at the Blue Lagoon – take hats and lots of sunscreen as well as water.
There is a small kiosk but it is very expensive and doesn’t sell real food, so unless you want to walk over to the Comino Hotel (10 minutes) for lunch, take your own.
