Best for History - Expert review of Wordsworth House & Garden
Museums can be dull, especially for children, but this Georgian townhouse, where little Will spent some of his happiest days in the 1770s, is very much a living museum. It is now back open after damage during the 2009 Cumbrian floods.
The house tour recreates the sights, sounds and clutter of the bustling family home with costumed heritage interpreters staffing the house in character as servants. We found them cooking lunch in an authentic recreation of a Georgian kitchen.
What I love about this is the lack of stuffiness and no entry signs. We were postively encouraged to dress up in period clothes and join in the spirit of the times.
Standard admission is £5.90; child £2.95. Reductions when arriving by public transport - show ticket at reception before purchasing admission.
