Best for History - Expert review of Robben Island Museum

This essential cultural and history tour is an unforgettable eye opener.

A former leper colony made famous for the role it played in the life of many a political prisoner - most famously Nelson Mandela for 18 years - the island’s chequered past is movingly communicated by guides. Have your picture taken in the cell where Mandela earned his post graduate degree in law, visit the quarries where he and other political shape shifters toiled and be prepared to be get misty eyed at the suffering of so few for so many. The gateway museum at the V&A Waterfront is your point of departure via ferry to the island and features a number of well-chosen displays.

Price advice:

Entrance is 200 rand for adults, 100 rand for under 18s.

Expert tips:
Be warned – there have been numerous issues with the island ferries over the past year with cancellations and the like. Confirm any bookings.
