Best for Culture - Expert review of Cape Town Township Tours
There are many township tour offerings in and around the city but one of the reasons I like this one is because it's an owner-run establishment and also because Langa, where it is based, is nice and close to the city. It also shows a more balanced view of a township community.
Langa was established in 1923 and is an ordered community of mostly formal and some informal housing. Your tour will bring you into contact with many locals, you will see how residents live and will even learn a few words of Xhosa, the language spoken by most people. Visits to an after-school dance programme are included while owner Siviwe can tailormake your tour according to your interests - taking you to a school, health clinic or the striking Guga S'Thebe cultural centre, where regular exhibitions are a highlight.
Expect to pay 200 Rand for self-drive tours or 350 Rand including return transfers from a central point in Cape Town.
