Expert review of Musée de la Castre
Once you've climbed up the Suquet Hill (see separate entry) you’ll spot this museum easily. It’s housed in the fine old 11th-century castle and tower used by the monks of the Iles-de-Lérins to protect their mainland base.
Within is an eclectic range of stuff. You move from archaeology and 19th-century Provençal paintings to the much more interesting rooms devoted to the primitive art of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. There’s some cracking material here, notably from Tibet and the Himalayas.
You might also be interested in a first-rate collection of venerable musical instruments. As I said, the place is eclectic – and please don’t miss the outstanding views from the top of the tower.
Adults: 3.30 euros. Students, under-18s: 2.25 euros.
