Best for History - Expert review of Brighton Museum and Art Gallery

This is the brightest and best of the city’s museums.

Though rather overshadowed by its neighbours the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Dome, this interesting museum is worth a special trip. Like the Dome, it’s an ornate Regency building that once housed royal servants and horses but has been repeatedly re-modelled on the inside, most recently at the turn of the millennium.

Best known for its collections of 19th and 20th-century fashion, style and design, it also has an illuminating local history section and fun interactive displays for kids. I think it’s great that it’s free, as it merits several visits - and as it’s right in the centre of town, it’s easy to dip in and out.

Price advice:

It's free, except for special exhibitions.

Expert tips:
The museum hosts children’s workshops and events from time to time.
The Gallery Café has a great view over the 20th Century Art and Design Gallery.
