Expert review of Platja de Aiguablava
The Spanish have voted this Blue Flag beach, just a short drive south of Begur, the best beach in Catalonia in previous years and it’s one of my favourites too. If you want the intimacy of a small cove but also want somewhere to eat on the beach with golden sand and shallow water that the kids can play in, this is the beach for you. The gorgeous bay is bigger than a lot of the small coves along the Costa but at the same time smaller and cosier than the longer beaches like Canadell. It’s flanked on either side by pine-forest clad mountains and there’s a good, deep stretch of sand with only a couple of xiringuitos at the back where you can get great seafood. If you had any doubts about the clearness and blueness of the water, Aiguablava means ‘blue water’ in Catalan.
Recommended place to eat.
If you fancy a smart, very good lunch, check out the restaurant just above the beach that's run by the Parador de Aiguablava - the huge white hotel perched on the cliff above.
