Expert review of Cala de Aiguafreda

Idyllic, rocky bay near Begur – perfect for picknicking, boating or diving.

A lot of my friends often cite this as their favourite beach on the Costa Brava. Just a short drive from Begur and nestled below the Puig Rodo mountain, it’s wonderfully secluded, surrounded by rocks and tall, shady pines. Instead of sand it’s got flat rocks that get warmed by the sun with small, cool, rock pools inbetween but the sea is the most stunning vision of crystal clear turquoise green. It’s perfect for family afternoons out as there’s a designated picknicking area with stone tables and benches in the shade of the pines and it’s also a big favourite with divers and boaters. There’s a boat jetty (you can rent motor boats nearby) and the beach also has washrooms, showers and even a car park. You can also rent diving equipment and take courses from the diving centre at Sa Rascassa, just behind the jetty and also from the nearby Gym Sub -

Recommended place to eat.

The Sa Rascassa (and Hotel) just behind the beach is one of my favourites in the area with fabulous food served in a romantic garden.
