Expert review of MACBA
A modern art gallery in a dazzling white edifice.
This vast glacier of a building was plonked in the middle of the Raval as part of a drive to gentrify the area, and has certainly brought about some changes to this part of town (not least for the dozens of skateboarders who cavort about on the square in front).
The collection itself can be a little impenetrable to the uninitiated, and it’s worth choosing your exhibitions carefully, but genuine art lovers will find it fascinating. It concentrates on local artists, such as Antoni Tàpies, but temporary shows cover a multitude of styles and themes.
Price advice:
An annual pass is good value at 12 euros.
Expert tips:
Over the summer months the museum stays open late on Thursday and Friday nights, when there is a reduced entrance fee and a bar service on the upstairs terrace.
