Expert review of Haridimos Shadow Puppet Theatre

A glimpse into the dying art of karagiozis - Greeceā€™s equivalent of Punch and Judy.

Through figures, sets, and storybooks, you can trace the history of karagiozis, Greece’s shadow puppet theatre. A converted hat factory in Thisseion contains the archives of three generations of master puppeteers – Christos, Giorgos and Sotiris Haridimos.Sotiris Haridimos, who ran the last puppet theatre in Plaka, is often here in person. An unemployed hunchback, Karagiozis is the ultimate anti-hero. Cunning and crude, his efforts to outwit the establishment usually end in disaster. But they provide great opportunities for social and political satire. There are occasional performances and puppet-making workshops (only in Greek).

Expert tips:
The cultural centre also contains a recreation of an Athenian high street as it would have looked at the turn of the 20th century.
