Expert review of Byzantine and Christian Museum

Iconic art from Byzantium and beyond.

This recently renovated museum is a real find. The outstanding collection of Byzantine art ranges from ecclesiastical textiles, mosaics, frescoes, and manuscripts to more than 3,000 haunting icons. The building is evocative of an Orthodox monastery, with a cobbled courtyard lined with vaulted colonnades. In May 2010, a new wing opened, which covers exhibits from the fall of Byzantium to the 20th century. The works are displayed alongside their social and historical context, which really brings them to life.

Price advice:

€4, concessions €2. Free for under 18s.

Expert tips:
A beautifully landscaped little park is also part of the very successful revamp.
