Best for Escapists - Expert review of Colónia de Sant Pere

Little-known fishing port with a thriving surfers scene and some excellent fish restaurants.

I share this secret corner of Majorca with reserve since few people ever seem to go there, which for me is a big part of the charm. A pleasant promenade and a shingle beach (mainly used by surfers) used to be about it, so I was surprised to find a groovy boutique hostal, and a cocktail bar among my usual haunts for a plate of fried fish. That said it still has a very special, ‘insidery’ vibe which I love, and I never tire of the fantastic walk out to the windswept Ermita de Betlem (follow signs along the cliff path), which makes a great precursor to a long, lazy lunch.

Expert tips:
Sa Xarxa serves fish straight from local boats. Try it the local way: baked in a salt crust to keep it juicy.
