An unspoilt east coast beach way off the beaten track.
Anyone looking to completely escape the tourist trail should head to the east coast settlement of Abades.
The road passes a small development of new houses before ending in an oversized car park at the coast where a path scrabbles over rocks to a golden, sandy cove and sheltered bay. Beyond the bay, sand dunes are frequented by a handful of naturists.
Expert tips:
On the headland is an abandoned military outpost and leper colony whose construction was interrupted by the Second World War and so it was never completed or occupied.
