Where to shop in Kendal

Kendal is synonymous with Kendal Mint Cake, the energising treat famously enjoyed by climber Chris Bonnington on the summit of Everest in 1953. There are still three manufacturers in Kendal – Romney’s, Wilsons and Quiggins.

The award-winning More? The Artisan Bakery (Mill Yard, Staveley LA8 9LR; +44 1539 822297; www.moreartisan.co.uk) near Kendal offers a wide selection of treats. The bakery was set up by local chef Patrick Moore and is home to moreish muddees, slices of chocolate brownie heaven so good they even have their own fan club.

Low Sizergh Barn Farm Shop in Kendal, housed in a 17th-century barn, offers everything from gourmet treats to the work of local potters and artists (Low Sizergh Farm, Kendal LA8 8AE; +44 1539 560426; www.lowsizerghbarn.co.uk).
