Where to shop in Berlin

Berlin has been getting better and better for shopping ever since the Wall fell in 1989.

While there are plenty of high street brands and flagship stores, the city is best known for its wealth of boutiques, which are spread throughout the city's inner city districts like Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichschain in the former East and Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg in the West.

Designer clothes and delicious food, gorgeous bookstores and home decoration shops - you'll find it all here.

Follow the links below to read two of my shopping guides: Shopping in Berlin: boutique hopping and Shopping in Berlin: Ku'damm, a famous city street.

What you need to know

Many Berlin shops open Monday to Saturday from 10am -6pm or 7pm, though the smaller boutiques often won't open until midday. Most shops are closed on Sundays.

Service is mixed, but tends to be a bit better in the shops than in the cafes and restaurants, where the famed Berlin nonchalance veers between charming and frustrating.
