How to have a good night out in Copenhagen
For such a relatively small capital city, Copenhagen offers a surprisingly vibrant and superior choice of places to party and relax. Simply put, this is a great town for after-dark fun, whether you want to sample the city's variety of micro-brewed beers, glam things up over cocktails, sample fine wines or dance till the wee small hours.
The city's variety of micro-brewed beers is a minor marvel, but you do have to look for it. No problem of course if you follow my Nightlife in Copenhagen: beers, cocktails and wine bars guide. The same applies to good wine. The Danes have developed a taste for a range of wines from New to Old World and you'll find plenty of cool little wine bars dotted around the city, not to mention a growing number of clued up sommeliers and wine buyers.
The most recent trend in town has been the cocktail bar. Dozens seem to have sprung up in the past five years or so and many offer smart loungey alternatives to the traditional cafe or bar scene. The cocktail menus have also gone upmarket. Sadly cocktails in particular are not that cheap. The bill for a round of them may have you seeing double, so if money is tight, a dose of happy hour deals will help medicate the financial pain away (happy hour times vary pretty widely, although 4-6pm is common).
Live music is also thriving here, whether it's orchestral pomp you're after at the spectacular, state-of-the-art opera house, the world class Kongelige Teater (home to Denmark's Royal Ballet), or down and dirty blues. Copenhagen's open-minded fans welcomed blues and jazz artists from the USA in the 1950s and 1960s and it became an important city where many of the legends of these genres played. It still strongly celebrates these genres today with some excellent venues and also attracts big name rock acts, as well as more left-field independents - very much in the way that London does. This all flows over into the club scene which is as well plugged into the latest trends and sounds in rock and electronic music as any other smart European city.
