The highly decorated Jeff Baker certainly knows how to cook up a fantastically inventive treat.
The creative potential of sparklingly fresh produce from the surrounding shire knows no bounds at one of York’s best dining houses. This firmly established bistro may look innocuous, but my eating experience here was out of this world. Unpretentious, yet quirky, sometimes mad as a box of frogs; the menu is a wonderful, sometimes unpredictable journey through the playful minds of its kitchen creatives.
Food and drink:
Among a regularly changing menu, Jeff Baker mixes the homely and comforting with the extremely inventive. Potted rabbit and pork with Chablis mustard and lemon accompanied by crunchy porridge perhaps followed by venison tartare or Whitby crab with heritage apple and curried granola are just a taste of recent offerings. If all this weren’t enough, chocoholics should head upstairs for some sweet indulgent heaven.

A continually changing menu, I left it in the hands of the experts and went for the grazing option, a seven-course sample featuring a carefully chosen selection of the best flavours, colours and textures available that season.
Ambience:
The food does all the talking here. Bistro style surroundings are simple and understated dressed in contemporary furnishings to create a comfortably democratic ambience in which nobody should ever feel out of their depth. I do like the cow art hanging on the walls.
Service:
Warm and friendly, I found the staff well trained with a knowledgeable dedication to a great dining experience.
Location:
The bistro is in the heart of the city centre at the top of Fossgate, an up and coming area for bon viveurs.
Price advice:
J Baker's Bistro Moderne offers fantastic value for food of this quality. The grazing menu at night currently costs £39.50 while by day expect to pay £12 for three courses, £20 for five courses. Bottles of wine start from an affordable £18.50.
