Expert review of Gmoa Keller

This is a legend of a place: one of Vienna's oldest inns, whose history goes back 150 years.

This is my favourite Wirtshaus (inn) and it serves the heartiest home cooking you'll find. For 10 years now Sebastian Laskowsky has been running the show – a delightful one that seems to get better as time goes by. It's just around the corner from Akademie Theater and Konzerthaus so avoid curtain times, that's when it gets busiest – around 9.45pm to 10pm.

Food and drink:

There's no break in the food supply as the kitchen stays open till midnight. Gmoa Keller serves traditional Viennese cuisine with many seasonal specials. The dish I usually go for is the juicy rump steak covered with onions and roast potatoes. There's draft beer, an excellent choice of Austrian wines and a daily changing menu to keep everyone happy.

Ambience:

Gmoa Keller is furnished - as a Wirtshaus should be - with traditional wooden booths, white linen and sparkling crystal, and is so very popular with concert and theatre-goers who come after the show for supper. The Schanigarten is only for 30 people so get there early on a warm summer's evening.

Service:

The staff are excellent, professional and friendly.

Location:

Gmoa Keller is fairly central - it is directly opposite the stage entrance to the Konzerthaus, close to Stadtpark underground station and a few minutes on foot to the Ringstrasse.

Price advice:

My favourite dish Wiener Zwiebelrostbraten mit Braterdäpfeln (beef roast with onions and roast potatoes) costs 12.80 euros (a bargain). If my appetite is less ravenous then I'll have the Sacherwürsteln (long, think frankfurter sausages) for 4.20 euros. Other smaller dishes range between 6.80 and 8.50 euros. Desserts are available for 2.90-4.60 euros. Excellent wines cost between 2.80 and 4 euros.
