Expert review of Glacisbeisl
Schanigarten means some form of outdoor seating, and can be anything from a peaceful oasis under trees or a few tables and chairs on the pavement of a busy street. Beisl is the name given to a very casual restaurant or pub-like eatery serving traditional Austrian cuisine. Glacisbeisl is the perfect combination of the two! What was once part of the city's fortifications now offers locals and tourists a chic, unflashy interior and a gorgeous garden.
Available during the week from noon till 3pm there's a menu consisting of soup and a main course – very traditional Viennese fare. The vegetarian option comes with the choice of soup or salad. Classics include well-known dishes such as goulash, char, stuffed dumplings and schnitzel, of course.
Dark wood dominates the sleek interior, in neo-Beisl style, and is quite a contrast to the romantic, shady and flowery Schanigarten.
The highly-skilled staff are both efficient and friendly.
Glacisbeisl is above the MuseumQuartier, tucked into the old walls of the city. Enter from above: from Breitegasse or up the steps from the MQ. This eatery is just above the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art).
The set menu price is 7.80 euros. A three-course meal with drinks will cost approximately 25 euros.
