Helmut Österreicher has been cooking for decades. He left what is today one of the best restaurants in the world, the Steirereck, to retire, or so everyone thought. Fortunately he made a come-back in 2006 and transformed a run-down university mensa into this top-notch eatery. Although you'll see some students here today, it has become a popular meeting place for all ages, particularly for the arty in-crowd.
A mix of traditional and modern Viennese cuisine can be found on the menu. One of the classic dishes is Krautfleckerl – small square pasta mixed with caramel browned cabbage – served together with a green salad. A daily lunch special is the biggest draw. One of the chef's modern signature dishes is the mayonnaise egg with smoked salmon.
Whether you choose to have a drink at the bar, a meal in the restaurant or in the peaceful garden, you'll notice this is a casual, laid-back eatery. Don't miss the huge chandelier made entirely of empty wine bottles above the bar - this is a design feature by Lobmeyr. I've noticed that most of the patrons seem to wear black and they are a chic, trendy crowd.
The staff are friendly, efficient and well trained.
Österreicher im Mak is on the Ringstrasse inside the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts). Enter either directly from the pavement – a tiny doorway – or through the museum entrance and design shop.
The daily lunch special costs 6.70 euros, Krautfleckerl 8.80 euros, small dishes run between 8 euros and 14.50 euros and main courses are between 12.90 euros and 22.20 euros. Austrian wines by the glass are 3.30 euros.
