Expert review of Osteria San Marco
Eating well around St Mark’s square is a difficult task: indeed, on the whole I avoid this area where the concentration of tourist-trap eateries matches the concentration of tourists. It may be on one of the city’s busiest shopping streets, but spacious, contemporary Osteria San Marco is my one exception.
A four-strong team has transformed a passion for food and wine into a restaurant where the seafood couldn’t be fresher – sample it in a fritto misto of fish, prawns and julienned vegetables – and the selection of wines by the bottle or the glass is impressive.
Laid-back and friendly. Note that this is one of the few places in Venice where you can eat a meal at any time, rather than at rigid serving times.
Waiters are only too ready to talk you through the day’s offerings or advise you on what to drink to accompany your meal.
On one of Venice’s busiest, chic-est shopping streets, immediately west of St Mark’s Square.
A sit-down three-course meal will cost you around 55 euros, but you can also opt to perch at the bar and snack.
