Expert review of Mistrà

Popular with local workers, this simple trattoria’s seafood dishes are reliably tasty.

A recent move from high up a rickety staircase in the middle of a boatyard, to street-level accommodation not far from the Zitelle vaporetto stop has made this simple restaurant on the Giudecca island less atmospheric perhaps, but definitely easier to find. And a pretty courtyard area for al fresco dining is a welcome plus.

Food and drink:

I was relieved to find, on my most recent visit, that the boatyard workers who always made the old venue a noisy, friendly joy to eat in at lunch time have followed Roberta Zucchetti and her husband Alessandro to the new premises. Some just drop in to perch at the bar (spritz ingredients were already lined up on the counter and much in use when I dropped by before lunch). Others sit down to tuck in to huge servings of good Venetian stalwarts (I enjoyed my big plateful of steaming spaghetti with squid ink on a cold early-spring day) and very fresh fish cooked up in the open-to-view kitchen. In the evening, the vibe is rather more sophisticated, and the opening up of the plant-filled courtyard has given the place more of a holiday (as opposed to a work-a-day) air. But in general Mistrà remains a good bet for seafood which is reasonably priced (for Venice) and generally well prepared. There’s now pizza at lunch and in the evenings too.

Ambience:

Jolly boatyard workers and other locals from the Giudecca swap conversation between tables over lunch; slightly more upmarket and subdued in the evening.

Service:

Affable and generally efficient.

Location:

On the Giudecca island, in a square just a few metres back from the Zitelle vaporetto stop.

Price advice:

There’s a fish-based set lunch menu at 18 euros; a full evening meal without wine may push the tab up to 40 euros.

The best restaurant we visited in Venice! Food was outstanding and overall very friendly and welcoming. Don't expect a romantic candle-lit touristic venue....but the chef and team are clearly very passionate about their food and service. Wonderful! I would rush back there tomorrow.
