Expert review of Trabuxu
Trabuxu (meaning corkscrew in Maltese) is one of the few true wine bars in Malta and serves excellent inexpensive home-cooked food. It won the top award from Malta’s Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants in 2010 in the lowest price bracket and it is indeed one of the best value places to eat in Malta.
There is a list of 300 local and foreign wines plus a small blackboard menu of home cooking – cottage pie, chicken stew, vegetarian ravioli, with side salad all beautifully presented - at very reasonable prices.
It's a small cosy vaulted cellar of a traditional 17th-century (Knights’ period) Valletta townhouse; dark wood and musical instruments hang on the walls along with a changing display of contemporary art.
Staff are welcoming and efficient.
It's at the top of a flight of stone steps that is the top of Strait Street. The other end of the road was once Valletta’s red light district. No more.
One of the very few places where you can get a good plate of food and a glass of house wine for not much over 10 euros.
