Expert review of Lulu
Picture windows look out onto the floodlit limestone walls of the palazzo opposite, while the modern interior is comfortable and the food very good here.
The imaginative Mediterranean cuisine includes excellent fresh fish and risotto starters that are a meal in themselves. If you still have room, they do a great combined pudding with a little bit of five different dishes.
It's smart but relaxed. The décor is very contemporary but the seating, on well padded chairs and sofa-style benches, makes you (well, me, anyway!) want to lounge comfortably over the meal.
Lulu is owned and run by one couple (with help, of course). Service is friendly and helpful and they are always happy to answer questions about the food.
It's in the centre of the most modern part of Malta around where St Julian’s meets Paceville, close to the new Portomaso complex. It isn’t the most atmospheric area, but because the 17th-century Spinola Palace fills the opposite side of the street, Lulu feels both peaceful and historic.
Starters are 7-9 euros, mains 16-23 euros, and puds around 5 euros (it's 10.40 euros for the combo of five).
