Expert review of Nippon
You can take the simple, handwritten sign announcing the opening times as an indication of how unpretentious this restaurant is. Intimate, with authentic Japanese decor, in classic red, white and black, I felt as if I was eating in a private home and being treated to the host's favourite dishes.
Tao, the chef and owner, explained to me how the classic sushi and sashimi menu was extended some years ago (this restaurant has been going since the late 1990s), with the addition of three Teppanyaki tables, where the food is cooked in front of you. This is a lovely way to interact with Tao, who clearly loves the personal contact with his clients, and learn a little more about Japanese cooking.
It's classic Japanese: simple decor and a restful atmosphere.
Tao's wife Singh can normally be found serving - she's a sweet lady who always seems very keen to make sure her customers are happy.
It's on the main road in the old town in the centre of the resort.
Dishes range from between 5 euros to about 20 euros. If you want to go for the full Teppanyaki experience, expect to pay about 40 euros a head.
