Expert review of Max

This is first-class cooking in the centre of Positano.

Slap bang in the centre of Positano central, just off bustling piazza dei Mulini, Max is a little oasis of quiet serving up fine cooking at prices that, while not cheap, compare favourably for the area.

Food and drink:

The menu covers plenty of pastas, such as lasagna with ragù or rigatoni with homemade meatballs, as well as fish and meat dishes. There is an excellent cellar and good wines by the glass, and lovely breads and homemade breadsticks for nibbling on while you wait for your meal.

Ambience:

On the day I last visited Max, the restaurant was surprisingly empty; surprising because it's a beautiful space, filled with fine furniture, works of art and interesting antiques.

Service:

The staff are friendly, attentive and efficient.

Location:

Positano can seem like an endless trail of tourists shuffling up and down that narrow streets so slipping off down some steps to a quiet place like Max is a real bonus.

Price advice:

I haven't yet discovered the 'bargain meal' in Positano. Max executes tasty, well-made food at prices that, while you won't exactly wince, might make you think wistfully of the little trattorie you ate in while you were in Naples. Pasta with swordfish and capers will cost around 16 euros and wines starts at around 30 euros a bottle but, happily, you can have a very good glass of local Fiano for 8 euros and a Taurasi for 12 euros.
