Expert review of Le Pré Verre
No matter that it's little more than a converted corner café, the Delacourcelle double act has become one of the most sought out restaurants in the Latin Quarter. This is a place I recommend for its combination of real cooking at bargain prices from chef Philippe Delacourcelle, as well as some good regional wines chosen by brother Marc.
Philippe Delacourcelle is known for his love of exotic herbs and spices, creating subtly spiced versions of French terroir. As well as working at some of France's top restaurants, he travelled widely in Asia before opening this casual bistro (and has since opened an offshoot restaurant in Tokyo). Dishes change frequently but trademarks include pork ribs or steak with smoked potato puree and unusual desserts like strawberries with parsley ice-cream.
Simply decorated, with russet walls, wood floor and menus scrawled on blackboards, but home for chatty Latin Quarter academics and residents after real cooking at bargain prices. A lot of people are regulars.
I've found that service can be grouchy, especially to newcomers, but it's worth it all the same.
A quiet street corner near the Collège de France and the Sorbonne.
The daily changing lunch menu of entrée, plat, glass of wine and coffee for just 13.50 euros is one of best bargains in Paris; or there's the three course menu carte available at lunch and dinner for just 28.50 euros.
Try to get a place inside on the ground floor or a pavement table rather than in the cellar.
