Expert review of Wallse

Who knew Austrian food could be this good?

This amazing restaurant has introduced New Yorkers to Austrian food and is now becoming one of the city’s best.

Food and drink:

Chef and owner Kurt Gutenbrunner has created a wonderful homage to Austrian food, especially in his tasting menus with their sensitive wine pairings. Among the standouts are a flakey strudel stuffed with perfectly cooked salmon and a signature wiener schnitzel.

Ambience:

A modern smart dining room.

Service:

The staff are very knowledgeable and attentive, which is especially important because of the constantly changing specials based on local and seasonal ingredients.

Location:

In the culinary Mecca of the far West Village on a pretty residential stretch.

Price advice:

Save up. At this splurge-worthy spot the wiener schnitzel will set you back almost 50 bucks and the six-course tasting menu is US$95 per person. Luckily it’s worth the price tag.

Tables to book:

Ask for one of the tables by the floor-to-ceiling windows so you can watch the neighborhood go by.
