Expert review of The Spotted Pig

A wonderful Gastro pub with excellent food and potent cocktails.

With big food and entertainment names behind it - everyone from Italian impresario Mario Batali to Ken Friedman, a former record bigwig - it’s not surprising that this hotspot in the West Village has both excellent food and a great scene. The only downside to the atmospheric destination is that it’s so popular that sometimes there is an hour wait for a table. I always belly up to the bar for some deviled eggs in the meantime and a stiff Bloody Mary while cooling my heels.

Food and drink:

A modern-style gastro pub with inventive food like smoked haddock chowder with homemade crackers, porcini vegetable stew with celery leaf, pan fried calf’s liver with mashed potatoes and a hearty char grilled burger, compliments of a former London River Café chef. The spot also serves up a wicked Bloody Mary, a Six Points “Righteous Rye” ale, and excellent Pimms Cups as well as having a 100 plus wine list. Suffice it to say that I have had a few boozy nights here.

Ambience:

Charming and atmospheric, it’s the perfect quirky setting for a London meets New York type of space. Think of touches like an old wood bar, rock 'n’ roll soundtrack and walls covered in paraphernalia, taxidermy, you name it. Oh and a beautiful crowd.

Location:

On a charming residential street in the West Village. You will want to walk around a bit before or after to discover why this area has some of the most pricey real estate in town.

Price advice:

With main dishes from US$13 and a three-course meal without wine about US$45 per person, these are high prices for a pub but the food is excellent and worth the trip.

Tables to book:

No reservations although it is essential to book for groups over six. The tables on the second floor are quieter than those adjacent to the bar.
