Best for Gourmets - Expert review of Per Se
The French Laundry in Yountville, California, is arguably the best restaurant in the United States. Now the owners have brought a destination property to the East Coast.
The food and drink is incredibly inventive, with a tasting menu of small plates that can take the whole afternoon or evening to savor and dishes that use the best American ingredients like scallops, oysters and farm-raised beef. Make sure to save room for the dessert and amazing homemade chocolate truffles.
The elegant dining room is a bit staid but the views over Central Park are glorious.
The service is attentive and friendly, although I found that the staff hover a tad too much.
Housed in the Time Warner complex at Columbus Circle where many of the city’s gourmet restaurants have debuted.
Staggeringly expensive—the nine-course tasting menu starts at US$275—you’ll want to save this for an occasion or for impressing clients.
If you are in a bigger party ask for the private dining room. Otherwise try to book a table close to the windows facing Central Park.
