Expert review of Motorino
Pizzerias can be found on almost every street corner in New York City. Some open and close quickly, others have longevity. Motorino's is of the latter variety. The Brooklyn-based "chain" opened shop in the East Village in 2009 and quickly drew the crowds. The pizza is hearty and delicious and I frequented the spot before I went gluten-free.
Everything tastes fresh and is artfully prepared. If you're a pizza connoisseur you'll appreciate the high-quality meats and cheeses used for toppings. The restaurant serves a number of craft beers and has a full wine selection as well.
Start with an antipasti but don't fill up on too many. You came here for the pizza after all. The margherita offers a perfect balance of basil, tomato and mozzarella. I love the stracciatella, with basil, olive oil and sea salt. My friends like the crimini mushroom and spicy sausage pizza.
The 36-seat eatery features marble-topped tables, wood chairs, a tin ceiling and subway tiled walls. The crowd is mainly younger couples and singles.
Service can be a bit spotty. One night you may get served quickly, another night it's a bit of a wait. Go during the week to avoid the crowds.
On East 12th Street, but far from the maddening crowds.
Dinner for two will cost about $60. The restaurant runs prix fixe lunch specials that run to $13 per person.
The restaurant's main branch is located in Graham Avenue in Brooklyn.
