Expert review of Lombardi’s Pizzeria
Ask a New Yorker where the city’s best pizza is and you’re liable to get into a discussion as heated as any religious or political argument. Or as heated as if you are a Yankees or a Mets fan. But for my money the pies at Lombardi’s gracefully straddle the divide between much loved and cheap pizza-by-the-slice places like Joe’s and Famous Ben’s Pizza and more artisinal and experimental choices like Co. and Neapolitan-style Motorino.
It’s all about the pizza here which exemplifies the Italian thin-crust style, crisped to perfection by their coal-fired oven. But there’s also a decent wine and beer list.
Cheerful and bustling, this is a great spot if you have kids in tow or are looking for a good meal that doesn’t break the bank. During the summer months, they open a garden area which is a lovely outdoor space.
There is a quick turnover here and the staff reflects the all business attitude of taking your order and getting the food out quickly. Nonetheless servers are perfectly friendly.
This Little Italy Institution opened in 1905 and has seen the neighborhood change from an Italian-American center to a gentrified, trendy part of the city.
Main courses from US$15.50 may not sound cheap but you get enough to almost feed the whole family with one dish!
No reservations so expect to wait, especially on the weekends. Also if you aren’t in a rush try to wait for an outdoor spot.
