Best for Cheap eats - Expert review of La Fusta
Manhattan has quite a few steakhouses, many of which are iconic eateries. But if you don't want to spend too much and want good cuts of beef, head to this Argentine steakhouse in the heart of Queens. The slabs of beef are large and juicy enough to please even the most cynical steak lover.
La Fusta features high quality steaks and seafood. You wouldn't know that for the price, but the owners pride themselves on serving high-end meat. The portions are huge. Eye-bulgingly huge.
The menu is vast and includes pasta and chicken dishes. Don't be overwhelmed, however. Stick to the steaks and you can't go wrong. The best dishes include the grilled filet mignon and the special mixed grill. If you're adventurous, opt for the sweetbreads and blood sausage. Dishes come with mashed potatoes or French fries.
It's informal and bustling. The clientele is local and many Argentines head here. You can see full tables of families and friends sharing the large portions.
Service is matter of fact, like most steakhouses, but always with a smile. Don't ask for a burger, the staff will give you the look of death.
On a busy corner in Elmhurst, Queens. It's easily accessible by subway.
The portions are huge so you can even share a half serving and be filled. Dinner for two runs to about $40.
The restaurant has a branch in nearby northern New Jersey (1110 Tonnelle Ave, North Bergen; 201-770-1950).
