Expert review of El Papagayo
Nestled between the beach and the steep cliffs, this is one of Nerja’s most talked about eateries. The smallish, white wooden restaurant is literally a stone’s throw from the shoreline and is my favourite Nerja lunchtime spot in the summer. Only lunch is served at El Papagayo as the kitchen closes at 4pm, but the bar’s open until late - see you there for sundowners? - and there’s often some funky, live sax to watch the sun go down to.
The menu consists of simple, summery, Mediterranean beach favourites including freshly cooked paellas, salads, wraps and barbecued fish. And they often come around with free watermelon after your meal, which I always think is a nice touch. The chefs obviously take pride in their work.
It's chilled out to a degree that would win over a Californian surfer. I defy you not to relax and unwind here as you look across the beach and down to the sea from your table.
It can be a little slow when it’s busy, which is almost always in the summer.
It's just below Nerja’s famous Balcón de Europa. Follow the pathway down to the beach.
It is only a touch more expensive than your average beach restaurant/bar, but the quality is better than most. Expect to pay 15 euros a head for lunch.
