Expert review of Antica Trattoria da Carmine
Directly opposite the entrance of Napoli Sotterranea, Da Carmine does a roaring trade, thanks to its adherence to traditional recipes, ample portions and a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. On my last visit I was serenaded (quite randomly) by a singer of canzone (traditional Neapolitan songs). I later discovered that he appears (albeit briefly) in John Turturro's latest film Passione. This could only happen in Naples…
It's rustic. The special on my visit was an enormous plate of pacchetti (pasta tubes) with sausage and aubergine (which was unbelievably good), followed by a delicate escalope dressed with a little oil and lemon. Delicious. But the kitchen is also renowned for great seafood dishes, as well as their own filetto a modo nostro (beef fillet served on bread with tomatoes, parmesan and rocket).
This is real trattoria territory, down to the wooden chairs and tables, with chequered tablecloths. It's never less than lively here and all the better for it. The atmosphere is convivial but the food is taken seriously - just as it should be.
It's friendly, but efficient.
It's very central, halfway between San Pietro a Maiella and the Duomo, close to San Paolo Maggiore and Chiesa di San Lorenzo. Coming from Tribunale, close to central station, head down Via Tribunale until you get to Piazza San Gaetano. It's on the left, opposite Napoli Sotterraneo.
It's extremely reasonable: two primi, a shared secondi, and a couple of quartos of wine (it wouldn't have taken much more for me to join in the singing, if only I'd known the words) costs 25 euros.
