Expert review of Cioccolat Italiani
In a town that is so passionate about fashion and so full of size-zero stick insects, I found it immensely comforting to find a temple of chocolate. Being Milan, it isn’t a wade in and stuff your face with as much as you can eat – it’s more Willy Wonka meets Armani. Very designer, very chic, very high end and organic, but absolutely fabulous.
The name really says it all – this is all about chocolate. Hot chocolate, chocolate ice cream, chocolate crepes, chocolate in a roll, chocolate salad – sweet and savoury, dark, light and white. And it is very superior chocolate, in case you were in any doubt! There is also plenty of ice cream. And you can buy chocolate to take away, from ingots (sharing slabs to place on the table at the end of the meal with the idea that everyone shaves off what they want) to Tastool high fibre chocolate laced with citrus peel, ginger, strawberries and nuts.
The décor is clean, modern and chocolate coloured, with sleek lines, wood tables, and long counters where chocolate ‘barristas’ strut their stuff, with everything from the bakery to the chocolate fountains on show.
As you are able to watch every stage of the construction process service becomes performance and art. Inevitably, with so much to do, it can get rushed.
A bit out of the way, not far from San Lorenzo Maggiore, in an area that is a popular café quarter for young Milanese.
A second branch is opening in Via Santa Radegonda near the Duomo.
