Expert review of Baretto al Baglioni
The Baretto was famous long before it moved into the Baglioni hotel. Hugely popular with everyone from pop stars to politicians, it offers a winning mix of posh pub and trattoria that serves incredibly good versions of uncomplicated food. I was given a menu in English, but looking around the room I realised it definitely marked me as an outsider. Most tables were full of repeat visitors having detailed discussions about the recommendations of the day, with not a menu in sight.
There are absolutely no pretensions here, they concentrate on classic Milanese and Mediterannean recipes cooked to perfection. My osso bucco and saffron risotto were bursting with flavour. At the next table, they were eating a white truffle risotto that perfumed the whole restaurant.
English club goes to Italy. Wood panelled walls, hunting prints and racing green give the rooms a warm cosy feel with tables packed in and packed.
Watching the waiters work was like watching Picasso painting. They are masters are their art.
In the Baglioni Hotel, on the edge of the Quadrilatero d’Oro.
Expect to pay 80-100 euros for three courses without wine.
