Expert review of Fontanella
Fontanella is famous throughout Malta for two things – its views and its chocolate cake. Both are well worth sampling!
The cakes are the thing. The chocolate cake is the famous one but there is a long list and I like some of the others just as much. The rest of the food - light meals and sandwiches – is pretty ordinary.
Cakes!
It's outdoor, but partially covered. The atmosphere downstairs is nothing special. Sit on the upper terrace on top of the fortifications of Mdina with a 180º panorama - fabulous. Note it can get windy.
Staff are often rushed off their feet and service can be very slow. Relax and enjoy the view.
It's just off Bastion Square at the high point of Mdina. Wander your way up past the sights and rest your legs here before heading back.
It's 2.60 euros for a large slice of cake.
