This delicatessen in the centre of Manchester is ideal for a quick breakfast or lunch.

Katsouris was where I dashed for my sandwiches when I worked on Deansgate and I now head there if I am in the city centre and don’t want a sit-down meal for lunch. The deli is in a grand old building on the corners of Deansgate and John Dalton Street and is a great alternative to all of the chain coffee shop options nearby.

Food and drink: 

There are numerous tempting hot and cold lunch options ranging from a carvery to a help-yourself salad bar. Depending on how hungry you are feeling, you can choose between whole or half ciabattas stuffed with fillings of your choice.

Recommended dishes: 

A good salad bar is a rare treat and Katsouris’ is great. I always end up precariously balancing dolamades on top of a pile of Greek salad in the attempt to fit as much as possible on my plate. On a cold winter’s day, the made-to-order hot ciabattas come highly recommended – especially Zorba the Greek (halloumi with tomatoes, asparagus and tapenade; £2.70 for half a ciabatta).

Ambience: 

Despite occupying a large, high-ceilinged building, the deli is crammed with local office workers during the week so avoid peak times if you would like a more relaxing meal.

Service: 

As this is a deli not a restaurant, you need to queue up to place your order. The service tends to be quick and efficient but don’t forget to listen out for your number being called.

Location: 

Katsouris is in the centre of Manchester on Deansgate just a hop, skip and a jump from the main shopping areas.

Price advice: 

The all-day breakfast options range from £1.50-£4.95. Hot ciabattas are, on average, £2.70 for half, £5 for whole.
