Expert review of Tepic

Superior Mexican cuisine in buzzy setting.

There are surprisingly few good Mexican restaurants in Madrid. Tepic is doing its damnedest to put that right by serving up authentic dishes that are a world away from the unidentifiable mush you get in a lot of places. With white brick walls and a huge photograph of a grinning Mexican occupying one wall, this is a striking place to dine.

Food and drink:

Quesadillas, guacamole, tacos, enchiladas, enmoladas… I have never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here. The margaritas are pretty good too. Have beer with your food, as there is no wine list.

Ambience:

Very fashionable with a lot of gay customers - this is Chueca after all.

Service:

Waiters are happy to advise you on the menu.

Location:

In Chueca, Madrid's trendy/gay area, between Chueca and Gran Via metro stations. Lots of other bars in the surrounding streets.

Price advice:

Expect to spend around 30 euros a head.
