Expert review of Magasand
This feels more like the sort of sandwich bar you come across in London. The emphasis is on good-quality ingredients, and everything is freshly made. You order downstairs, put your food in a little wire basket, then head upstairs to sit on a stool at a long table, or on a sofa, with one of the international design magazines from the shelves if you like.
Sandwiches include the Spicy Bonito, with tuna, tomato, walnuts, rocket and wasabi mayonnaise. You can choose the type of bread or roll you want from a wide range - almost unheard of in Madrid. There are also roast beef, pastrami or smoked salmon bagels. If you fancy a salad, choose from spinach, chicken, goats' cheese or put your own mix together. There are also soups, cakes, juices, smoothies and Italian artisanal ice creams. For breakfast, there is muesli and yogurt as well as the usual pastries and toast combos.
Soothing, even when it's busy.
Helpful in the face of chronic indecisiveness.
In a side street off the main Chueca beat. Good spot for lunch or a bit of a sit down if you happen to have been to the Museo del Romanticismo, or just mooching around the shops on Calle Fuencarral.
Most of the sandwiches and salads are between 4 and 7 euros. A cafe con leche is 1.50 euros. Freshly-squeezed juices are 2.70-4 euros.
