Chic gourmet tapas bar run by Michelin-starred chef Sergi Arola.

Sergi Arola is one of Spain's top chefs, with several restaurants in Madrid and Barcelona. His latest venture in the smart Las Salesas area is set on two floors, with a gastro bar upstairs and a cocktail bar downstairs, which is run by leading cocktail maker Diego Cabrera. Although Arola devised the menu, the head chef here is Benjamin Bensoussan from Marseilles. You sit at the bar and watch the action in the kitchen. The downstairs bar gets going as soon as people start spilling out of work in the late afternoon.

Food and drink: 

Sergi Arola likes to reinvent tradtional recipes. Here you can have patatas bravas, although you might not recognise them as such. There's also grilled calves' liver, quail thighs, ham croquettes, cod fritters, clam chowder and garlic prawns. Desserts are absolutely delicious, and there are some seriously good wines.

Ambience: 

Decor is a mix of designer bar and gentleman's club, with a bit of 80s disco thrown in. The clientele is mostly fashionably-dressed and well-coiffed.

Service: 

Excellent. Staff are very knowledgeable about food and drinks.

Location: 

Las Salesas is a smart area with lots of boutiques and galleries, between Chueca and the Paseo de Recoletos.

Price advice: 

Tapas are 5-16 euros. Downstairs, cocktails are 10 euros, which sounds a lot but they are really good. And I speak from experience.
