Expert review of La Botilleria de Maxi
A stalwart on the Madrid restaurant scene, La Botilleria de Maxi is unpretentious and oozes character. It’s a good choice for a cheap sitdown meal when sightseeing or for a late lunch on Sunday after the Rastro flea market.
The signature dishes are callos a la madrilena (slow-cooked tripe with sausages and paprika) and rabo de toro (braised oxtail), but there’s also pisto (similar to ratatouille), warm goats’ cheese salad, spinach quiche and baby broad beans with ham and fried egg, as well as charcuterie and cheese platters to share. On Thursdays and Saturdays they do cocido madrileno (beef, pork, sausage and chickpea stew).
Relaxed. Even on a workday lunch no one seems to rush here.
Friendly.
Near the Plaza Mayor in the old town.
The tripe is 10.50 euros and the oxtail is 13.90 euros. Pisto is 8.50 euros. Set lunch is 9 euros for three courses with wine.
