Expert review of Bolivar

A grown-up restaurant in boho Malasana.

Excellent produce coupled with a creative touch have made this small restaurant a word-of-mouth success. It's another one you might not notice as you walk along the street, and inside it's all subtle stylishness, but I come back here again and again because I always enjoy the food and it's a really comfortable place too.

Food and drink:

The food here is all about traditional Spanish cooking with a light, contemporary touch. We usually have the prawn croquettes and tempura vegetables to start with. For main course, I like the gilthead bream baked in salt, but often have the free-range eggs with Iberian ham. I'd also recommend the pork with Idiazabal cheese sauce and the sirloin with foie and a Port reduction.

Ambience:

This is the kind of place where people linger over dinner.

Service:

Knowledgeable and effiicent without being too formal about it.

Location:

At the San Bernardo end of Calle Malasana. Plenty of bars nearby for that last drink.

Price advice:

Starters are between 8.50 and 15 euros. Mains 11.60-23.80 euros. Desserts are 4.90 euros.
