Expert review of Albur
This is one of the places you'd probably just walk past, not realising that the food on offer is way above average. Albur works as both a tapas bar - whether you want to eat at the actual bar or sit down - or as a proper restaurant. It's a great place to go if there are a few of you with different tastes and differing degrees of hunger. They specialise in regional recipes from all over Spain, using carefully sourced produce, often with guaranteed origin status.
I like the gravadlax with guacamole and mojo sauces (with coriander and chilli), which are typical of the Canaries. They have a range of tostas (toast with savoury toppings), and lots of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie. I like the tempura vegetables too, served with romesco sauce, a hazelnut, red pepper and garlic sauce from Catalunya. All the meat comes from the Valle del Esla in Leon. The rice dishes are very good here, and they do a good value set lunch. Desserts are all home made and there is a great selection of wines by the glass.
Usually pretty lively. Get there before 10pm to grab a stool at the bar. There are lots of tables in an adjoining room, but it is more fun in the main area.
Sometimes great, sometimes forgetful. I won't name names.
In Malasana near the Glorieta de Bilbao, there are lots more bars nearby.
The set lunch is 11 euros. Lots of the tapas are in the 10 euro range. Main courses are 10-17 euro.
