Expert review of Taqueria

A stylish cantina using high quality ingredients to make punchy tacos and tostadas.

London’s Mexican restaurants are not renowned for their authenticity but Taqueria is arguably best of the bunch. I love its stylishly unfussy vibe and often pick up a pack of the kitchen’s own corn tortillas to enjoy at home.

Food and drink:

Chorizo fans won’t want to miss the home-made chorizo in dishes such as the choriqueso taco, which features the sausage rolled in browned cheese. I love cochinita pibil, where pork is marinated in achiote and orange juice before grilling, and almost always order a tamarind agua fresca to accompany. The dessert list could be more enticing, but do you really need anything more than churros with toffee sauce?

Ambience:

Light and breezy, thrumming with locals, American expats and other people au fait with Mexican food.

Service:

A little more slickness would be appreciated.

Location:

On one of Notting Hill’s smartest shopping streets.

Price advice:

Prices start at £2.50 for a tostada and rise to £6.50 for the likes of chargrilled steak taco with mashed avocado and salsa.
