Expert review of Mestizo
Mestizo attracts a lot of London’s visitors because it lies close to the hotels of the Euston Road, but it’s also one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in the city and an equally popular destination among local office workers and Latin American expats.
I love huitlacoche (sweet, mushroomy tasting black corn fungus) and this is one of the few Mexican restaurants in London that serve it. Also unusually, there’s a choice of three different mole dishes, and pozole cooked Guerrero-style, which you can have with chicken, pork or a mixture of the two. Don’t fret if all you want is straightforward tacos or enchiladas – they serve them too. The choice of tequilas is encyclopedic.
Smart and contemporary, but not dauntingly so. As the evening wears on it takes on a nightclub vibe thanks to the colourful bar.
Cheerful and knowledgeable.
It’s a bright spot in a dreary area.
Mains start under a tenner for the vegetarian options but stretch right up to £24 for beef fillet with chicken enchilada and all the fixings. Tacos are £4.80-£8.60.
The same team own a great little burrito bar on Charlotte Place called El Burrito – see website for details.
