Expert review of Blueprint Café

Every table in this light, cheerful restaurant offers a mesmerizing view of the City.

First up: this is not a café. It’s a proper restaurant that happens to be set in the same building as the Design Museum at Butler’s Wharf, on the south side of the river. The good thing about not being in the City is that you get a great view of it – Tower Bridge, the Gherkin, St Katharine Docks – and Blueprint Café’s position on an upper floor certainly gives it the edge over its street-level competitiors.

Food and drink:

Head chef Jeremy Lee, who has been here 15 years, has helped define the modern British style and embraces local, seasonal produce. France and the Mediterranean are very much an inspiration, but so too his Scottish upbringing. This is a great place to try smoked eel, if you’ve not had it: the starter with horseradish cream, onions and sourdough toast is something of a signature dish. I have fond memories of a summery plate of freshest brill and peas. Having said that, the kitchen struggles with consistency and meals can have a potluck element.

Ambience:

The position attracts a clutch of special occasion diners as well as a relaxed business crowd.

Service:

Usually extremely good.

Location:

When it first opened this place was so unpleasantly remote it could as easily have been Timbuktu, but as the area has developed it’s evolved an agreeable 15-minute walk from London Bridge tube.

Price advice:

The panorama obviously commands a premium, but keenly-priced set meals pitch two courses for £15, and three courses for £20. Wines on the international list start at £18 a bottle.
