Best for Cheap eats - Expert review of Vertigo

This very pretty and buzzing café hums to the natter of lunching ladies.

Just around the corner from Largo do Carmo in the busy shopping district of Chiado, this is just the place for a mid-shop bite. Shopping bags are usually propped up against table legs as gal pals discuss shoes, handbags and the latest Brazillian novela (soap opera).

Food and drink:

Healthy fare is the staple here: soups, smoothies, salads, quiches, calzonies and ice green tea are the house specialties.

Ambience:

The feel is smart and stylish in classic surrounds, with stone flooring, stained glass ceiling, marble tables and faded-wood panelling on the walls. The crowd is in their 20's and 30's.

Service:

All service is at the counter, which can mean a queue, annoyingly.

Location:

In one of Chiado's square-linking backstreets.
