Expert review of Varanda

Fine dining in grand and historic surrounds.

I only dine here as a rare treat. This is the place to come for sophisticated high-end dining. You won't look out of place in a tuxedo or ball gown, while rubbing shoulders with the highest of Lisbon and Europe's high society.

Food and drink:

This place brings traditionally rough-and-ready fare of Portugal and gives it a strong twist of finesse. The seafood is top drawer and the wine list is as long as it is pricey.

Recommended dishes:

The only time I visited I had the menu degustation, of which the highlights were the lobster couscous and the duck magret.

Ambience:

It's very formal here, to the point that it feels rude to talk above the volume of whispering.

Service:

Excellent the waiters are always on-hand at the slightest flinch of a request.

Location:

Obviously in the Hotel Ritz, the restaurant couldn't be in a grander location. There are also lovely views overlooking the Eduardo VII Park.

Price advice:

Including wine our bill totaled around 70 euros pp.
